Whose performance are you relying on?

That’s the question posed and answered by Rupert Shelley’s excellent sermon last night on Luke 18:9-14 at our Guest Service.

Are we, like the Pharisee, trusting in our own performance? That is the way of pride and contempt as I compare my performance to yours.

Or are we, like the tax collector, trusting in the performance of Another? Abandoning all attempts to justify ourselves and casting ourselves on the mercy of God. That is the person God accepts and makes righteous (‘justifies’) on the basis of Christ’s performance.
